Pearlescent pigments are all around us. They are used whenever a soft shine, a satin luster or a brilliant metallic appearance is desired. It is composed of mica platelets and consecutive semi transparent layers of metal oxides. They deliver superior colors, whiteness, brilliance and coverage with extraordinary optical effects ranging from a fine-grained luster to a bold sparkle.
Physical Theory
Pearlescent pigment is based on mica substrates which is coated with TiO2 or other metal oxides. The light which can be seen in the image being reflected, refracted and transmitted simultaneously to produce the play of colours is known as pearlescence.
Particle Size & Color Effects
Based on the substrates available, a large diversity of effects is obtained by variation in the particle size.Fine fractions have the least luster and highest opacity and the larger particles have more transparency, show glittery effect and have greater brilliance.Based on particle size from fine to coarse we can get different effects from Silky, Pearl, Shimmer & Sparkle effect.
